Can Bengalooru emulate traffice rules in Germany and improve its road conditions?
The thought which often comes across my mind is that will Bangalore benefit to follow this model. Let us first face the fact that we are atleast 10 years away for the citizens to abide diligently to the rules of the road. But, even if they, will it solve the problems. Again, No.. The key differentiator is the quantum of vehicles and the range of vehicles.. With such a huge traffic any city will choke.. As a proof for this thought, I did have the privilege to get caught in huge traffice jams in Munich.
Once in the autobahn, it took me 2 hours to cover a distance of 20 kms. Believe me, this was a painful drive, especially drive neck to neck, only on a straight line, with a clear visibility of the jam for several more kilometres.. Here is the interesting part.. Some people decided rules were enough and started driving onto the buffer lane which should be used only for emergencies.. At some junctions, people crossed each other without following the rules of "right of way".. Yes, "people are the same everywhere, only a little more or little less".. Even for people, who were taught to abide rules from birth, got tempted to break the rules with a single traffic jam..
So, imagine if Munich was so much crowded as Bangalore with so much vehicles, I am sure we will have the same chaos in traffic. Actually, some of the "right of way" rules work only because of lesser traffic. At a junction where you want to take a left, you need to give preference to the oncoming traffic and take your turn only after the oncoming traffic ends. And, it works here because after 5 to 10 vehicles, the oncoming traffice really stops. Will this happen in Bangalore ? We will end up endlessly waiting for the vehicles without a stop...
So, at times, I think we are surviving in Bangalore traffic only because of the citizens who have learnt to adapt the rules to practical use. Of course, I do not justify all offenders in Bangalore who block the road on the wrong lane..
Is there a solution for bruhat bengalooru ? There is hope only by the following approaches:
a. Definitely, have a metro (clean, friendly, cost effective, well connected, punctual) to reduce
number of vehicles on road.
b. With better public transport, use and even sales of private vehicles will reduce. Make people enjoy the travel and spend the time for other activities like reading books..
c. Reduce variety of vehicles on the same road (cars, scooters, bikes, cycles, autos, carts). It can lead to more traffic jams and accidents..
d. Discourage vehicles to centre of city by increasing parking fee, making it terrible and even costly to park a private vehicle in the city centre.
e. Introduce "park and ride" concepts where people can take the vehicle from home to a nearest metro point, park their vehicle and travel comfortably in public transport. People mostly need the last mile in their own vehicle to compensate for practical inability to provide total connectivity to all parts of the city.
f. Develop well connected suburbs with more incentives for people to settle in the suburb with own townships.
Well, hoping towards a greener, cleaner Bangalore - the one atleast 20 years back...
